A user on the song’s official YouTube video fondly shared their own experience with “We are Singapore” when they were in secondary school back in 1987. In those youthful days, they and their fellow classmates would gather in the school hall to practise NDP songs for the upcoming National Day celebrations. Back in 2021, this NDP anthem inspired not only hope but also some seriously wild dance moves from Marc Lim (@marc_carc_macandcheese). His exuberant and humorous routine sparked a nationwide dance challenge that had everyone grooving with delight!

In a year filled with uncertainties and challenges, Marc Lim’s TikTok dance turned into a symbol of optimism. She shared how she enjoyed singing the song while changing her son’s diaper during his infant days. Now that he’s a little older, he knows to sing along whenever it’s changing time (cue the chorus of “Aww”s).

It became a special bonding moment between mother and child, a testament to the powerful connection that these songs have in our lives.

“Reach out for the skies” (2005 NDP) by Rui En and Taufik Batisah

In 2005, “Reach out for the skies” graced the NDP stage, leaving an indelible mark on the nation. This energetic and catchy song, featuring Rui En and Taufik Batisah, brought a fresh and modern flavor to the annual celebrations. The song’s infectious beat and empowering message encouraged Singaporeans to reach for the stars and achieve greatness together.

Another one of our colleagues shared a heartwarming memory of “Reach out for the Skies.” They revealed that this song held a special significance in their life, as it was the very first NDP song they heard after moving to Singapore when they were just in Primary 3. The experience of learning the dance moves and seeing everyone come together to celebrate the nation’s pride left them in awe.

The magic of that moment sparked their love for National Day songs, and they were amazed to learn that Singapore had a new and inspiring song every year.
