A 3.7ha brownfield site bounded by Alexandra Road, Alexandra Canal and Prince Charles Crescent will be redeveloped for future public housing.
In a joint release issued on Wednesday (15 December), the Housing Development Board (HDB) and Singapore Land Authority (SLA) revealed that the site will add around 1,500 flats to Singapore’s public housing landscape.
To facilitate the development, the Government will acquire the 0.23ha land currently occupied by Alexandra Post Office as well as SingPost’s tenant.
“This will allow for more residential units to be built to meet the strong demand for housing, and enable a more optimal planning and design of the public housing projects,” said the authorities.
SLA has gazetted the acquisition of the affected land on Wednesday (15 December), they said, adding that SLA and HDB will “work closely with SingPost and its tenant and assist them through the acquisition process”.
Situated within the mature estate of Bukit Merah, the site was home to low-rise public rental flats as well as a market and shops that were eventually demolished in the 1990s. It was later earmarked for residential development in 1998.
“HDB will develop the site in the near term, to meet the strong demand for public housing,” read the joint release.

The new housing projects at Alexandra “will add to the good geographical spread of public housing to meet the different needs of Singaporeans, including young families who want to live near their parents in the area for better mutual care and support”.
“The site’s location along the Alexandra Park Connector offers easy connectivity to the city, on top of the recreational offerings along this corridor,” they added.
Future residents will be served by the Redhill MRT station, which is about 400 m away.
HDB said it is currently drawing up detailed plans for the public housing projects at Alexandra Road/ Prince Charles Crescent and will share more details once ready.
