The Land Transport Authority (LTA) has revealed that construction works for Hougang MRT station on the Cross Island Line (CRL) are set to commence in Q4 2021.
The works cover the design and construction of interchange station and tunnels, as well as addition and alteration works to the present Hougang station on the North-East Line (NEL), reported Channel News Asia (CNA).

Samsung C&T has clinched the $604 million contract for the project’s design and construction.
The company previously completed the construction of Kovan and Hougang stations on the NEL. Currently, it is involved in the construction of other MRT stations and some stretches of tunnels at the North-South Corridor.
With the CRL, daily commute from Hougang to Sin Ming will be halved to 20 minutes. LTA also expects travel time from Hougang to Loyang industrial area to be reduced by 35 minutes, bringing it to just 20 minutes.
The CRL’s first phase, which comprises 12 stations, is set to begin passenger service in 2030.
The line, which is being constructed in three phases, will benefit over 100,000 households as it serves residential and industrial areas such as Tampines, Loyang, Defu, Pasir Ris, Serangoon North, Hougang and Ang Mo Kio, said LTA.
It added that the line will serve future and existing developments within the western, eastern and north-eastern corridors, connecting major hubs like the Changi region, Jurong Lake District and Punggol Digital District.
It noted that common recreational spaces such as Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park and Changi Beach Park will also become more accessible by public transport once the first phase is completed.
Singapore’s eighth MRT Line, the CRL will be the longest fully underground line in Singapore at over 50km.
