The Housing and Development Board (HDB) has presented a total of 35 design, construction and engineering awards this year – the biggest number of awards handed out since HDB Awards’ inception in 2008.

Of these, St George’s Towers by LOOK Architects “stands out with its distinctive architectural features amid surrounding lower-rise developments in the mature estate of Kallang/Whampoa”, it said.

The development’s façade, for instance, used varied precast façade components with different window alignments that are repeated every six storeys.
Each of the three blocks at the development is also interjected with sky terraces on the 24th floor. It is also integrated with a senior activity centre, which comes with communal spaces such as roof garden and rain garden with seating areas that are lined along the waterfront.
Heritage elements that reflect the area’s history as a swampland are also weaved into the development. Notably, a series of murals introducing facets of history can be seen at the porch and sheltered walkway.
The upgraded Hougang Town Centre, which features a fishing village concept and a swamp-themed playground, also clinched a design award.
SQFT Architects led the rejuvenation of the Hougang Town Centre under HDB’s Remaking our Heartland programme.
“The design concept was inspired by the history of Hougang, which translates to “the back of the river” as the area at the end of Sungei Serangoon was once a freshwater swamp occupied by the Teochew community which subsequently became a busy fishing village,” noted HDB.
The 10 housing projects that were given the HDB Construction Awards achieved Construction Quality Assessment System (CONQUAS) scores of above 90.
“Tampines GreenView and Meadow Spring @ Yishun were among the developments which attained the CONQUAS STAR with scores above 95 for exemplifying quality workmanship and good construction processes,” said HDB.
Meanwhile, four consultants and contractors were conferred with engineering award, which highlights the importance of “innovative engineering solutions in laying the foundation for a quality, sustainable living environment”.
HDB’s CEO Dr Cheong Koon Hean said the high number of awards presented this year “affirms the high standards of our industry partners” in helping HDB deliver a quality living environment.
“Our architectural and engineering consultants have displayed excellent consideration of site context and produced well thought out, attractive and creative designs, while our building contractors have innovatively overcome constraints and displayed high construction productivity and efficiency. We commend and congratulate them on their achievements.”
