Eligible households will receive three types of e-vouchers – $25 to purchase LED lights, $50 for water-efficient shower fittings and $150 for climate-friendly refrigerator.
Over 300,000 households in one-, two- and three-bedroom HDB flats will receive $225 worth of vouchers to help them buy energy and water efficient appliances under a programme launched by the National Environment Agency (NEA) as well as water agency PUB, reported Channel News Asia (CNA).
First announced in March, the $25 million Climate-Friendly Households Programme was rolled out on Saturday (28 November) as part of the launch of the Clean and Green Singapore campaign for this year.
Eligible households will receive three types of e-vouchers – $25 to purchase LED lights, $50 for water-efficient shower fittings and $150 for climate-friendly refrigerator.
In a release, NEA explained the programme’s impact on reducing energy and water consumption within the city-state.

“Refrigerators are one of the most energy-intensive household appliances, accounting for about 17% of the total electricity consumption in Singapore households,” said the agency as quoted by CNA.
“If each of the more than 300,000 eligible one-, two- and three-room HDB households switched to a more energy-efficient refrigerator, the potential combined electricity cost savings of these households would be about $160 million over the typical lifespan of the refrigerator.”
The reduction in carbon emissions from such households would be equivalent to the annual carbon emissions coming from 110,000 cars, added NEA.
If each eligible household switched one shower fitting to a water-efficient model, they could save up to 1.1 million gallons per day. This could lead to a $10 to $20 saving in each household’s annual water bill.

NEA also noted that if all eligible households switch to LED lights, they could collectively save $3.7 million in annual energy costs.
“This would be equivalent to saving enough energy to power about 5,000 three-room HDB flats,” it said.
Currently, 64% of the eligible households do not use LED lights, revealed the agency.
The programme has eight participating merchants – Bathroom Warehouse, Courts, Best Denki, Harvey Norman, Gain City, NTUC FairPrice, Sheng Siong and Mega Discount Store.
NEA expects more merchants “to come on board during the programme”.
Eligible households can apply for the e-vouchers, which are valid until 31 December 2023, at their website here.
