A total of $29 million has been set aside by the Ministry of National Development (MND) for the upgrade of 10 private estates.
The estates are – Cheng San Cactus Sunrise, Frankel, Fulton, Kew, Mei Hwan, Namly, Pasir Panjang Private Estate (East), Thomson Adelphi & Soo Chow, and Pemimpin, Watten as well as Westwood.
The upgrade works fall under the 10th batch of the Estate Upgrading Programme (EUP).
In the past, works included enhancing barrier free access, providing footpath lighting to enhance security and safety, improving the estates’ parks and landscaping as well as enhancing estate identity, revealed MND in a release.
Where possible, upgrade works are integrated with improvement works done by other agencies, such as drainage upgrading and coverage by PUB.
Since 2000, a total of $187 million has been spent by MND into upgrading older private estates.
The EUP’s previous nine batches benefited over 46,800 households across 63 private estates. For the 10th batch, MND expects over 7,000 households to benefit from the improved facilities once upgrading works are completed in around four to five years’ time.
“The EUP has contributed to the rejuvenation of many private estates around Singapore to meet residents’ needs and to promote community bonding,” said MND.
“As part of the EUP process, the Neighbourhood Committees (NCs) and Citizens’ Consultative Committees (CCCs) will seek feedback and inputs from residents, so as to incorporate their views in the upgrading decisions.”
This is to ensure that the upgrade works meet the residents’ needs, while providing the community a greater sense of ownership over the estates’ common spaces.
